How to Control Anxiety Attacks

I have suffered from anxiety attacks for a very long time. In the beginning they were overwhelming. I was a new mother and had just gone back to work when they started. Of course I immediately thought it was just too much stress. However, even after deciding to cut back my hours and getting into the swing of things to care for my child I was still suffering from anxiety attacks.

I think if it hadn’t been for my baby and the fact that I had to work to make ends meet I would have just stayed at home away from the world. I was so afraid people would think I was losing my mind. I was also afraid that they would say I wasn’t fit to care for my child. That is why I decided to find out how to control anxiety attacks. I made a decision that they weren’t going to control me any longer.

For me, taking back some of the control of the situation gave me a huge sense of relief. Instead of going out there day after day and praying that I could go to the grocery store or a meeting at work without worrying about anxiety attacks I was able to focus on controlling them. I tried to remember everything I could about them so that I could right it down. A huge part of how to control anxiety attacks is to look for triggers.

For me, those triggers included not getting enough sleep at night. Now, with a baby at home that wasn’t always easy to accomplish. However, I started to take more naps when she did and went to bed when she did at night instead of staying up to take care of the house. I definitely felt my well being was more important than a stack of dishes in the kitchen or a load of laundry.

I learned to identify the onset of them as well. This is one of the most powerful ways for me of how to control anxiety attacks. As I feel one coming on I talk myself through it. I have also learned a variety of breathing techniques and they do help. The key to that though is to practice them until you are very familiar with them so that they can help. I think it is important for everyone to explore how to control anxiety attacks and then to incorporate methods that work for them.

Anxiety attacks are difficult to live with and it is hard for others to understand what you are going through. I have been there myself and I have found that by learning how to control anxiety attacks I am not as afraid as I used to be. This has resulted in my anxiety attacks occurring less frequently. They are also not lasting as long as they used to. All of this is giving me confidence to continue with my life and to enjoy it to the fullest.
